QUAIL HOLLOW
FIREWISE

The Firewise USA® program provides simple, effective steps to help communities reduce the risk of destruction from wildfire.

We Need Your Help

Our Quail Hollow Firewise steering committee is committed to expanding our efforts this year.  However, we are pretty maxed out and really need your help to implement our goals.  Specifically, we are looking for additional volunteers to join our steering committee and will commit to implementing at least one of the following new goals:

  1. Organize a neighbor house numbering campaign. The Ben Lomond and Zayante fire chiefs have consistently encouraged us to help our neighbors improve the visibility of their home address numbers. As we shared earlier this year, in the case of a wildfire, visibility is very limited, so fire personnel may miss homes that do not have adequate signage. Also, consider the importance of an ambulance need to find your home in the event of an emergency. We need a volunteer to determine which homes could use better signage, reach out to them to share resources, such as the Zayante Fire Dept, and organize a campaign to encourage neighbors to improve their signage.

  2. Outreach to increase participation from Zayante Fire Department area neighbors. All of our current steering committee members live on or near Marion Ave. Our Firewise map includes folks who live on a portion of Quail Hollow Rd. and the adjacent streets, such as Noteware Dr. and Hidden Valley Rd. It's important for these neighbors to be included, and we could use support from someone in this neighborhood to lead this effort.

Without additional volunteer help, we will not be able to implement these additional improvements this year. We know that everyone has a lot going on in their lives. Please consider volunteering to help us out. During the fire season, our steering committee meets once per month. We discuss our plans for the year and progress on specific projects that are required by our Firewise annual certification.

We would be happy to discuss the responsibilities of the steering committee, as well as any of these tasks that you might be able to help with.

Together, we can make a difference.

About the Program

Neighbors helping neighbors–this is what Firewise USA® is all about. Residents join together as a Firewise site and take actions to prepare themselves, their homes and their properties against the threat of wildfire. They look out for one another and provide those in need of assistance with help in emergency preparation.

What are the benefits?

Firewise sites promote a culture of readiness and action that will save lives and homes in the event of a wildfire. Working together to identify risks and solve problems, the neighborhood take on projects that may be overwhelming alone. Neighborhood clean-up days and evacuation drills turn burdensome and scary challenges into communal events. If most homeowners in a neighborhood just do some work to clean up their yards and fireproof their homes, the whole community is much less vulnerable to fire. An active Firewise site is nationally recognized as a fire-adapted community.

Insurance Discounts

The Firewise program is sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). NFPA is now providing the Firewise USA® boundary data to insurance agencies through a company called Verisk. The only information shared by Verisk is whether a home is located within the boundary of a Firewire site.

Several residential insurance companies offer both community-wide discounts for homes located in Firewise areas and home-specific discounts, such as maintaining defensible space or implementing home safety measures against wind-blown embers. In some cases, these discounts can be combined. Because discounts and eligibility differ by company, we urge you to contact your insurance company directly to find out if your property qualifies. Here is a link to the California Department of Insurance webpage that lists companies offering discounts: https://www.insurance.ca.gov/01-consumers/105-type/95-guides/03-res/upload/FAQ-Safer-from-Wildfire-Regulation.pdf.
